 NFL: RAVENS: National Feedback

Here's what draft analysts are saying about another stellar Baltimore Ravens draft. . .

Mel Kiper, Jr., ESPN.com: The Ravens did a really good job of addressing needs effectively. Their first-round pick, DT Haloti Ngata, will help right away on the interior of the line and, they hope, will free up MLB Ray Lewis. Chris Chester will help on the offensive line, and David Pittman is an ideal nickel defensive back. On the second day, the Ravens helped themselves with WR Demetrius Williams, RB P.J. Daniels, TE Quinn Sypniewski and OLB Ryan LaCasse of Syracuse, who will be a good special-teams player.

Ngata (96) is a disruptive in the backfield.
John Czarnecki, FOXSports.com: The Ravens had another solid draft and much of it based on need. They traded with arch-rival Cleveland for Oregon strongman Haloti Ngata, who might be able to keep some blockers off Ray Lewis. Oklahoma center Chris Chester has quick feet David Pittman, a third-rounder, is a solid cover cornerback. Oregon receiver Demetrius Williams had 10 touchdown catches last season. They are trying to address the quarterback situation by getting Steve McNair from Tennessee. Running back Prince Daniels had a great season in 2003 for Georgia Tech and could be a pleasant surprise. Grade: B-

Adam Schein, FOXSports.com: Haloti Ngata was the ideal fit at defensive tackle for the Ravens. Ozzie Newsome made sure to get him when he traded up a slot in the first round. This is an excellent pick. Chris Chester had injury problems in college. If healthy, he gives the Ravens needed depth at guard and center. I like the pick. I was surprised they didn't add Max Jean Gilles in round 3. Oregon's Demetrius Williams can catch the ball and was a good value pick in round 4.

Pete Prisco, CBS SportsLine.com:
Best pick: Fourth-round pick Demetrius Williams is a steal. He will become a 60-catch guy by his second year. He's polished like Keenan McCardell.
Worst pick: It's really hard to find one, but this is always a team that drafts well. It's being nitpicky, but we'll go with third-round pick David Pittman, mainly because he is a raw.
Overall grade: A. Eric DeCosta picks up where Phil Savage left off, picking good football players.

Dan Pompei, Sporting News: Typical Ravens draft, as they'll get multiple starters. One of the best picks of the weekend was wide receiver Demetrius Williams in the fourth round. Grade: A-

Rob Rang, aol.com: Perhaps Ray Lewis should publicly question the Ravens commitment towards the lines more often. Baltimore added the draft's top run stuffer with Haloti Ngata from Oregon in the first round. Ngata is an immediate improvement along the line for the Ravens, and will extend Lewis' production for another couple of seasons. In the second, Baltimore selected versatile, but extremely raw, offensive lineman Chris Chester from Oklahoma. The Ravens' next two selections were solid ones as cornerback David Pittman and wide receiver Demetrius Williams are athletic and experienced enough to have an immediate impact. The Ravens looked toward developmental talent in the second day of the draft. Only running back P.J. Daniels and cornerback Derrick Martin are viewed as the most likely to make an impact as rookies. A solid draft, but a surprising lack of offensive linemen who can help immediately.

Jarrett Bell, USA Today: Three out of four stars - Nothing sexy, but Ray Lewis might agree with the choice of DT Haloti Ngata, considered the best run-stuffer in the draft and a wide body to keep blockers off the middle linebacker. C Chris Chester is a solid pick for a rebuilding O-line.

The Ravens are wrapping up one of the last phases of draft preparation, entertaining the final crop of college players at their training complex this week.

Team officials will bring up past brushes with the law. They will ask about major injuries. They will even want to discuss frequent flier miles.

"When I sit and talk with a prospective draftee, I will ask what teams he has visited and what teams he plans on visiting," Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome said. "I then have that as information."

Pre-draft visits mark the final step in the evaluation process and one last shot at gamesmanship among NFL teams. Whether or not they admit it like Newsome, every league executive keeps track of the players other teams are bringing to their facilities in order to gauge draft strategies.

But many teams try to use these visits as subterfuge leading up to the draft, which is set for April 29-30.

Some won't invite the players they really covet, while others fly in prospects they have no interest in drafting.

"This time of the year, people do things for a lot of different reasons," Newsome said.

The six first-round prospects who have had visits with the Ravens are: Tennessee safety Jason Allen, Florida State nose tackle Brodrick Bunkley, Florida State cornerback Antonio Cromartie, Oregon defensive tackle Haloti Ngata, Florida State outside linebacker Ernie Sims and Texas quarterback Vince Young.

A couple of days before Easter and a couple of weeks before the NFL draft, the Ravens already find themselves with all their eggs in one basket.

The Ravens' future is being dictated 700 miles away in the offices of the Tennessee Titans. It's there that Titans officials are deciding the fate of quarterback Steve McNair and indirectly, mapping the course for the Ravens.

Ravens officials watched the offseason quarterback shuffle from afar. In need of a new quarterback for next season, the Ravens barely raised an eyebrow for Drew Brees and Daunte Culpepper. They were waiting patiently on McNair, who is under contract with the Titans.

Now, we're close to seeing if all this waiting will pay off. While the draft board gets more muddled with each passing day, the situation in Nashville involving McNair and the Titans is unfolding just as Ravens officials had anticipated.

With the Titans barring McNair from working out at team facilities and the union filing a grievance on the player's behalf, it's tough to see the quarterback returning to Tennessee next season. Many mock drafts have been scrambling to update their boards, and the Titans are expected to take either Matt Leinart or Vince Young with their No. 3 pick. Both quarterbacks visited the team facilities this week.

The chess pieces are all moving, and if the Titans are intent on nabbing Young or Leinart, they could make their intentions known soon. Tennessee could waive McNair before the draft, injecting some breathing room in the salary cap to afford the pricey No. 3 pick.

This is the best scenario for the Ravens because the draft is the last opportunity - though an unlikely one - to find a legitimate alternative to McNair.
